Success with remarkable pipes in the Achental valley

Jul 31, 2012

Among many successful stories in the Achental valley, a new world-unique wood gasification plant starts operation.

A new landmark at the biomass trading centre Achental impressively shows new ways for a highly efficient energetic usage of wood. That is, a small wood gasification plant runs on economic terms with regional waste wood due to its novel use of heat pipes. The electric power of 380 kW and thermal power of 630 kW, generated with an efficiency of 80%, indicate the energy resting in currently marginalized wood from forestry or land care. Five hundred households can be supplied with heat and power by the plant, meanwhile saving up to 2,800 tons of CO2 every year. The new heat pipe reformer, developed by agnion Technologies, can be considered a role model for a decentralized, ecological and economic energy production in rural regions. The construction of the gasification plant is only one out of several so-called “summit projects” recently erected in the region. Such projects are salient for high efficiency, positive climate effects, potential for replication and touristic attractiveness. They were developed during the BMELV-funded “Bioenergie-Region” and significantly help in reaching the long-term objective of the Achental: to be dependent solely on regional renewable energies by 2020.
