Annecy is the Alpine Town of the Year 2012
Sep 28, 2011
For years now the French town of Annecy has been pursuing a policy of sustainability. As a reward for its efforts the principal town of the Haute-Savoie département and its 53,000 inhabitants have been nominated as the Alpine Town of the Year 2012.
The jury's decision was swayed in particular by the town's efforts in water and energy management and its pioneering role for the surrounding countryside and its cultural development. "Annecy has everything it takes to act as a role model for the many town-and-lake regions across the Alpine region," explained jury member Norbert Weixlbaumer. During its year as Alpine Town of the Year, Annecy intends to restore some of the wetland areas around its lake to their original state and also begin with the construction of an eco-district.
